NWPC National 2012 Election Preview
Time waits for no one, and although 2012 seems far in the future, the election year is hastily approaching. This election will have a direct effect on women’s rights and all eyes are on potential candidates. There will be nine open seats in the Senate indicating a particularly important year for advances in women’s rights.
Senate Prospects
So far we know that the following progressive, pro-choice women leaders have announced that they will run for office in 2012.
Shelley Berkley (NV-D) Currently serving as a Congresswoman in Nevada’s 1st district.
Susan Bysiewicz (CT-D) Former State Representative and Connecticut Secretary of State.
Pam Gulleson (ND-D) Former State Representative. Although she has not officially announced her candidacy, she has been publicly asked by prominent ND Democrats to consider a run.
Tammy Baldwin (WI-D) Currently serving as a Congresswoman in Wisconsin’s 2nd District. Rep. Baldwin has not officially announced a run, but is quoted to be “very likely” to throw her hat into the ring.
House of Representatives
In the house,, the following pro-choice women are known to be either challengers or running for open seats: Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-01); Elizabeth Esty (CT-05); Lois Frankel (FL-22); Tarryl Clark (MN-08); Franke Wilmer (MT-AL); Annie McLane Kuster (NH-01).
As of print time, our NWPC previously endorsed incumbents all appear to be running for re-election.
