MESSAGE RECEIVED: California Will Protect Women, Bodily Autonomy and Freedom To Choose

Women's March on Washington

A statement from our State Board President, Karriann Farrell Hinds:

The revocation of a woman’s right to privacy to make health decisions about our bodily autonomy will not only end reproductive choice as we know it, but will endanger our lives and increases the threat that states will restrict our lives in numerous other ways, including denying access to birth control, prohibiting marriage equality and even efforts to end racial discrimination.

The National Women’s Political Caucus of California stands with our National organization in efforts to protect women’s access to all reproductive health care across the country. NWPC California calls on our Legislators to immediately codify women’s access to reproductive health care and bodily autonomy unequivocally, including the passage of SCA 10 codifying access to abortion and reproductive health care as a right under the California Constitution.

As the results from the California Primary are finalized and we prepare for the November General Election, NWPC California will not allow candidates to hide who they are and where they stand on women’s rights. We will amplify our endorsed candidates who declare support for a woman’s unrestricted right to reproductive freedom, including access to abortion, and will call out any candidate who does not openly state support for women’s rights, full stop. Additionally, we call on organizations that proclaim allyship on women’s reproductive freedom to hold their endorsed candidates accountable, as well, and we will make note of those who do not. While the Supreme Court ruling was not a surprise, it was a wake up call regarding the threats to women’s independence and freedom, and NWPC California will work tirelessly to ensure that California stands as a model state for women’s equality.
