Bio
Jeanne Shaheen understands the challenges facing our state and our families. The mother of three daughters, Stefany, Stacey, and Molly, and now a grandmother of five, Elle, Annah, Caroline, Will, and AJ; she and Bill Shaheen have been married for almost 40 years, raising their family in New Hampshire. Jeanne's been involved in New Hampshire as a parent, and a high school teacher, in local government as chair of Madbury's zoning board, and a State Senator before being elected Governor. She leaves the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government, where she served as Director, to run for the United States Senate.
As a U.S. Senator, she'll stop the tax breaks to the big oil companies and instead invest in clean alternative energy. She will stop the giveaways to the insurance companies and support expanding health insurance coverage. She'll fight to end pork barrel spending and no-bid contracts that stop Washington from helping the middle class. And Jeanne Shaheen will have the guts to put an end to the war in Iraq and bring our troops home.
For New Hampshire's families, Jeanne Shaheen gained new protections for people in HMOs by taking on the big insurance companies. She lowered electric rates by taking on the big utilities. She opened the door to college for thousands of New Hampshire students by helping their families save money for tuition.
For New Hampshire's children, Jeanne Shaheen led the effort to prepare our children to compete and lead in the world economy by raising standards for teachers and making public kindergarten available to more than 16,000 additional children. She expanded health insurance to nearly 20,000 children who had none.
For New Hampshire's taxpayers, Jeanne Shaheen proposed responsible, balanced budgets, held the line on taxes, and demanded results. She put in place the first ethics code for government workers with tough new restrictions and accountability.
For New Hampshire's businesses, Jeanne Shaheen helped them meet the challenge of a global economy by leading international trade missions that brought New Hampshire businesses new customers and by investing in small businesses to create 50,000 jobs. She signed into law legislation creating a more favorable tax environment for venture capital, encouraging investment in start-up small businesses.
For New Hampshire's environment, Jeanne Shaheen led the way, enacting the nation's first law to reduce emissions of the four pollutants that cause global warming. And under her leadership, New Hampshire created the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program to help communities preserve the state's open and historic places.
