California Legislation of Concern to NWPC
Check this page often for links to
current legislation that pertains to one of
NWPC's bottom line issues:
Don't Sign 1249: NWPC-California opposes Initiative 1249, an insidious invasion of our right to private and confidential health care; we request that you join NWPC, Planned Parenthood and other like-minded organizations to assert a vigorous opposition to 1249 by using your public voice to denounce the measure. This third-cousin of Props. 73 and 85 is yet another covert attempt to undermine our basic rights to
private, confidential
health care, and is particularly oppressive to
teens.
California
should never support a culture of fear; this
is a completely inappropriate issue
for a constitutional amendment.
We already have laws that criminalize
molestation of minors.
We need to ensure that safe, private and
confidential reproductive health care is
available to and
accessedby all who need it, including our
vulnerable teens.
AB 1511: Assemblyman Mark Leno's Sexual Health and Family Communication Bill: NARAL Pro-Choice California strongly supports this proposed bill, which codifies and encourages opportunities and avenues for stronger communication between teens and families regarding sexual and reproductive health issues. This bill supports good family communication and offers positive alternatives to the burdensome public and judicial interference in reproductive health care as imposed by the two failed initiatives of 2005 and 2006: Props 73 and 85. NWPC-CA supports this bill.
SB 850: Senator Abel Maldonaldo's "Missing Angels Act": This bill proposes to authorize issuance of birth certificates to parents of stillborn fetuses of 20 weeks or more gestation. NWPC-CA opposes this bill, however sympathetic and well-intentioned its promoters, as unnecessary, of no substantive public purpose, and because such a document may be interpreted to confer personhood on an unviable fetus. Read NWPC's Letter in Opposition to SB850.
AB 1514: Assemblyman's Pedro Nava's MediCal Equity Act: This bill requires MediCal to provide the same comprehensive family planning services as the federal Family PACT ... and ensures choice in care and services and provides to poor women with respect to the full gamut of reproductive health care services, including full OB/GYN care with timely appointments, family planning, contraception, basic limited fertility services, etc. Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA is the sponsor of this bill; little opposition except from some managed health care organizations such as Health Net. NWPC-CA has not yet taken a position on this bill.
